Meeting Minutes

November 17, 2005

Present: Summer Dyer, Colleen Dickinson, Keneeshia Williams, Graham Huesmann, Kia Abbed, Stacey Hughes, Mai Dang, Alina Huang, Danielle Tomevi, Ricardo Bardales

  1. Officer Reports:
    President – Colleen Dickinson
    • Currently helping to establish committees.
    Vice-President – Harish Yalamanchili
    • Not present
    Secretary – Summer Dyer
    • Website updated with assistance from IT. Please contact Summer with any corrections or updates to be added to the site.
    • Requested committee reports from committee chairs at each subsequent meeting.
    Treasurer – Miguel Escalon
    • Not present
    • Jim Hall provided updated regarding Paypal status: Nov.6 = limited status placed on account, Nov. 9 = phone contact from Jim, letter faxed to Paypal with Jim's ID and contact information as well as Campus Sportswear contact information, Nov. 12 = documents received by Paypal. Need to resolve issues with Paypal before remaining profits from apparel sale can be withdrawn from Paypal account.
  2. Faculty Committee Reports:
    University Medical Student Council (UMSC) report
    • No report presented.
    • Next meeting: December 3 in Peoria.
    Educational Policy report
    • No report presented.
    Executive Committee report by Stacey Hughes
    • Meeting held October 26, 2005
    • Discussion of a previous request made by Dipesh Navsaria (former student member of committee) regarding voting rights of students on the committee and allowing the student member to remain in the room during deliberations on promotions and appointments. After discussion it was decided that the voting procedure would remain as it is and that the student committee members would still leave the room for deliberations on promotions and appointments.
    • Committee reports were given for EPC, SPPC, and Committee on Committees.
    • Next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at 1pm.
    Apparel Sales Committee Update by Summer Dyer:
    • Sale ended November 4
    • Total sales = approximately $8255.00
    • Total profits = approximately $2220.00 (~27%)
    • Biggest sellers: short-sleeve tee, hooded sweatshirt (no zipper); biggest flops: visors, ladies' shorts.
    • Continued difficulties with Paypal – should identify an alternative for online payment before spring sale.
    • Letters to parents appeared to increase sales markedly.
    • Orders to Tom at Campus Sportswear on November 15 (late due to Paypal difficulties); should receive orders on December 6.
    • Seeking assistance from volunteers to hand out orders (possibly December 8 and 9).
  3. 2005-2006 UMSG Committees and Election of Committee Chairs Fundraising Committee
    • Miguel not present.
    Community Service Committee
    • Harish not present.
    • Discussed establishing a wellness station to check blood pressures at the mall.
      • Run by M1 students
      • M3/M4 students teaching M1s to take blood pressures
      • Mary Mortland may have additional equipment that could be used at the station
      • May need a faculty advisor
      • Also requires someone present who is CPR trained
    Auction Committee report by Keneeshia Williams
    • First committee meeting held November 15 – poor turnout.
    • Committee members: Natasha Clark, Chiebonam Ezeokoli, David Gachoka, Summers Stacks, Keneeshia Williams
    • Date: Monday, February 6, 2006 at 7pm
    • Tentative location – Cowboy Monkey; would need to be out by 10pm, so looking into other locations such as Guido's or Highdive
    • Dr. Jim Slauch asked to serve as auctioneer
    • Currently collecting items for the auction
    • 20% of proceeds to go toward a Relief Fund, remaining profits will be used for spring formal
    • Discussed providing free alcohol tickets to students upon entry, need a location with food/snacks
    • Discussed inviting alumni or local physicians to help donate to auction or even attend
    • Next meeting: Dec 5 at 11:40am
    Spring Formal Committee
    Chair: Danielle Tomevi; still in search of a co-chair
    • Committee Members: Jim Wrzosek, Ingrid Knaus, Lori Schwartz.
    • Tentative date: Friday, March 31st
    • Tentative location: Stone Creek (Kennedy's)
    • Need to determine theme, make invitations, in search of a DJ
    • UMSG usually contributes ~$1000 for formal; will require $500 for location deposit.
    • Discussed raffling limo for evening or Faculty Pie-in-the-face event for fundraising
    • Next meeting: Monday, November 28 at noon
    Parent's Day Committee
    • Committee Members: Summer Dyer, Tracy Flood, Alison Palumbo
    • Nothing to report
    Cadaver Memorial Committee report by Kia Abbed and Stacey Hughes
    • Still unsure of location
    • Have learned from Martha that family members of cadavers cannot be invited to event
    Clinical Research Committee
    • Have not yet met as a committee
    • Vitaly has recently established a website for the committee; will link this site to the UMSG website.
    • Would like to provide an updated list of advisors willing to participate with medical students and residents
    • Discussed listing research opportunities at Peoria and Rockford
  4. Funding Request – Alternative and Homeopathic Medicine Student Interest Group
    • Request was made by Alternative and Homeopathic Medicine Student Interest Group to provide funding for lunch during group's noon seminar on November 1
    • UMSG contributed $98.00 to pizza for the group's seminar
    • Nearly sixty students in attendance (40 M1s)
    • Group felt the event was a success
  5. Open House for Illinois State High School Science Olympiad
    • Reported by Jim Hall (Vitaly not present)
    • Discussed providing activities for high school students such as a blood pressure check station or photo station where students could have their picture taken in white coat with stethoscope
  6. Variety Show
    • Alina Huang interested in chairing committee; will need a UMSG member to serve on committee
    • Last year's event cost $450, held at Lincoln Hall theater (about 100 students in attendance)
    • Usually 15-20 students/groups performing
    • Voted to hold a COM Variety Show during spring semester.
