- Stressed that those who sign up for a committee have a responsibility to participate in that committee's activities and attend committee meetings

University Medical Student Council (UMSC) report by Graham Huesmann and
Harish Yalamanchili
- Attended UMSC meeting in Chicago on October 1, 2005
- Dr. Joseph Flaherty, the new COM dean, spoke to UMSC members describing his vision for the college, including increasing the clinical research performed at each campus and emphasizing the clinical strengths of each campus in order to attract more research opportunities
- Discussed the increased size of the class of 2009 and the possible implications during third and fourth year clinical rotations
Educational Policy report by Keneeshia Williams
- Discussed setting up online course evaluations for all courses - would like to send letter to students from UMSG stressing the importance of completing these evaluations
- Discussed changes to the student promotions policy for M1 students (if accepted, changes would not go into effect until 2006)
Proposal: Students failing 1/3 of courses - retake exams during summer
Students failing 1/3-2/3 of courses - retake M1 year
Students failing >2/3 of courses - dismissal
Executive Committee report by Stacey Hughes
- Last month's meeting cancelled - nothing to report 3. Apparel Sales Committee Update by Summer Dyer:
- Sale began October 19
- Students were provided with letters to send to their family/friends and envelopes to address - UMSG would be responsible for mailing these for these; due to poor response from students, it was decided that UMSG could have access to parents' addresses in order to mail the letters directly to students' families
- To date, have sold approximately $500 worth of merchandise, but expecting much greater sales in final week
- Two logo designs were selected as winners of the design competition; it was agreed upon that both winners would receive free t-shirts 4. 2005-2006 UMSG Committees and Election of Committee Chairs

Community Service Committee

o Discussed establishing a school lunch improvement program
o Discussed possibly assisting other COM student organizations such as HERMES and PSR with their community service projects through assisted funding of these programs

Auction Committee
Chair: Keneeshia Williams (kwilli8@uiuc.edu)
o Auction will be held sometime during spring semester
o Need to select location for auction, contact previous auction donors

Spring Formal Committee
Chair: Still in need of a volunteer to chair this committee
o Need to quickly determine a location for this event (suggestions include Kennedy's, the train station, Champaign Country Club)

Parent's Day Committee

o Will be held on a Saturday, sometime during spring semester
o Discussed possibly scheduling this event to coincide with the Science Olympiad to increase high school students' exposure to events at the COM; agreed upon by group that holding both events on same date would cause too much confusion and congestion (decided against this)

o Provide students (particularly M1s) with opportunity to shadow a resident while presenting resident with research opportunities

- Request was made by Alternative and Homeopathic Medicine Student Interest Group to provide funding for lunch during group's noon seminar on November 1; speaker will be Dr. Briskin from Nutritional Sciences, speaking on herbs in medicine
- Decision was made to provide up to $100.00 for pizza lunch
- Need to establish UMSG guidelines to address funding request from other student organizations 6. Open House for Illinois State High School Science Olympiad
- Sponsored by both the College of Medicine and the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB)
- Will be held Saturday, April 29, 2006 from 8am-2pm
- Requesting COM participation: events to be sponsored here may include a walking tour, lectures for high school students and their parents, introduction to micro/histo lab
- Vitaly Stepensky offered to serve as representative from COM while assisting MCB with the planning of this event Next Meeting: Thursday, November 17 at 7 pm
