University of Illinois College of Medicine Urbana Medical Student Government
Meeting Minutes
October 29, 2002
UMSG Minutes 10/29/02
- Voting an additional member into UMSG

participation in UMSG is not limited to elected representatives
there is no need to be "vote in" new members since everyone is encouraged to contribute to the UMSG
- Instability in the local health care
market - Report from Dipesh

at least two pathology instructors are leaving because of the local health care market
UICOM has no medical faculty group, therefore students are seriously affected by the practices of the individual employing bodies (Carle, Provena, etc.)
UICOM has little say in who goes, but UMSG can draft a letter expressing our concerns
there was general agreement among the voting members
Dipesh will draft a letter to Dean Schwartz
- Sales of med school apparel - Report
from Adrian Cordovi

UMSG netted approximately $1000
1 windbreaker order from last year will be filled with this sale (payment was made last year but item was misordered)
a new lot (1000) of car stickers will be ordered; general agreement that this is okay because they do not spoil, or go out of style
merchandise should arrive a week before Thanksgiving break, allowing enough time for orders to be sorted and picked up prior to the holiday
overall, Adrian reports that the fundraiser was successful
- Physiology cardiology lab with the use
of pigs - Report from Adrian Cordovi

currently, there exists some aversion to the use of animals for experimentation (particularly live animals) and the cost of the lab
a petition exists with 40 signatures of M1 students who would like an alternative to the current lab
several students have begun a discussion and "investigation" about the need for the lab
their aim is not to eliminate the lab altogether, rather they want:
better disclosure about the details of the lab (i.e. the use of live animals for experimentation) to the students well in advance of the lab dates
better disclosure about the fact that this lab is optional
an alternative for students who do not wish to partake in the lab, but would still like the understanding of the concepts demonstrated - computer simulation or a video recorded session, for example
UMSG wonders if this falls under the domain of the EPC or if there is a high body to which to present this
discussion was left largely unresolved, however Adrian and Doug will continue to discuss it with Dr. Best, physiology discipline coordinator
- College of Medicine testing schedule

the M1's think having all the exams in one day is bad
the remaining M1 progress exams are spread out over multiple days (unlike the first two exams of the semester)
both methods - exams all on one day or ever multiple days - have their advantages and disadvantages and either way is likely to make some happy and
the M2's suggested that the M1's wait a form their opinions about which is best after finals
Akhil will work on a survey for the entire class for sometime in Janurary
- Release of Class Rank

there is some confusion about class rank
we are only ranked for AOA and for graduation with honors - and both of those are simply a "these members of the class are in the X percentile"
afterward, those lists are discarded, and no ranking information is provided in residency programs
therefore, there is nothing to release to the students!
- Discussion about other M1 classes:

Anatomy: structures not said in class or on the list in the lab guide which are on the exam
Physiology: recent regrade
students feel it was too late and too close to the second exam and the whole thing was poorly handled - not discussed in class, etc.
Jim Hall with talk with Dr. Best
Behavioral Science
a text book would be helpful
exam questions seem too subjective
there is no curriculum
Akhil will bring this up to EPC
- TV in the HUB?

there is some big long story why we can't get cable to that TV - some legal issue with the cable provider
Jim Hall will once again look into it
- Social Activities

M1's are asking to socialize with people besides themselves
Hershy will work on contacting law and business students for some sort of social - maybe for Feburary?
Next meeting Dec 2 6pm, room TBA
ALL ARE INVITED
