History of SALUD Medical Program
AmeriSpan’s SALUD program dates back to the year 2000. At that time, an AMSA (American Medical Student Association) member from Ohio contacted us with a special request to design a program geared for med students. The result: 20 medical students from 8 different states participated in our first SALUD program in Ecuador. Since its inception, over 750 healthcare students and professionals from 46 US States and 4 additional countries (Australia, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom) have participated.http://www.amerispan.com/salud_medical_spanish_programs/http://www.amerispan.com/salud_medical_spanish_programs/application.asp | Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Summer Program Summer Opportunities (Other) |

| This program has been designed to provide 1st year medical students with an understanding of the scope of family medicine as a primary care specialty. Students experience clinical medicine, not just observing, but participating in the healthcare delivery to citizens of rural, urban and suburban communities. Since inception in 1990, the program has grown rapidly. It is our desire to expose as many students as possible to family medicine, emphasizing ambulatory care in a community setting. See a list of 2005 participants and preceptors.
The Summer Externship Program comprises a network of community-based, educational programs for students who have completed their first year of medical education. Based in hospitals, community health centers, family practice residency programs, rural health clinics or with private practice physicians, the summer externship offers a unique educational experience not necessarily offered in medical school. Our preceptors are committed to teaching and have agreed to provide students with exposure to both clinical and non-clinical areas of their practice from administrative issues, technical and medical operations, to balancing a personal life away from medicine. This is your chance to have questions answered without an audience of classmates, or to see first-hand what you have been reading about for the past year.
Our Goal
Expose medical students to primary care in a family practice setting
Program Objectives
Introduce students to the realities of a medical practice during the early part of their medical education
Broaden student awareness and knowledge of the roles played by members of other healthcare professions
Increase student self-confidence in interacting with patients, physicians and staff
Expose students to the importance of the physician-patient relationship
Develop ongoing student-physician relationships that could afford continued support and guidance to a student
Acquaint students with the advantages/rewards of choosing family practice by allowing them to observe the management of a medical practice, the lifestyle of a family physicians and the relationship between the family physician and other community resources.

|
The Appalachian Preceptorship is designed to expose medical students to rural primary care practiced in a manner sensitive to the culture. Students will participate in one week of didactic sessions on the ETSU campus and spend three weeks with a rural physician practicing in an Appalachian community. Students will benefit from the cross-cultural experience, whether they choose to practice in Appalachia, urban areas or other communities throughout the nation. This elective is approved for credit as a required ambulatory or family medicine rotation, or as a senior elective. Students that have completed their first year of medical school through their fourth year are eligible.
Students will spend three weeks with a physician practicing in a rural Appalachian community. The preceptors are dedicated to excellence in patient care and community relationships, and they serve as role models for students. The nature of the clinical and community involvement will vary based on the student's level of training and interest, as well as the individual characteristics of the practice.
The week of didactic sessions is comprised of concentrated lectures on such subjects as Appalachian history and economics, rural health issues, alternative health systems and, interviewing from a cultural and personal perspective using the patient centered method. All lectures hold special significance for rural family practitioners, especially in the Appalachian region. Several area rural physicians participate in panel discussions in which they share information about their community involvement and describe what it is like to practice in a rural community. In addition, field trips may be scheduled to look at a variety of models of health care delivery in the area, local economics, and culturally sanctioned health care alternatives. A variety of recreational activities are planned each year, depending on the interests of each group. Past activities have included white water rafting, hiking, backpacking, boating and fishing, volleyball, and trips to local attractions.
Responsible Faculty: Forrest Lang, M.D.
The preceptorship is offered during the summer and is four weeks in duration. The didactic portion will be offered once during July, usually beginning with the Friday after the Fourth of July and concluding the following Friday. It is common for students from different schools to have different beginning and ending dates for the overall preceptorship.
Application Process
All applications must be received by March 15 of the year the student wishes to participate. Please complete the online application. Those accepted into the program will be notified by the middle of April.
