Description of Sessions

Clinical Trials and Clinical Residency Programs
This session will be presented by Wade Clapp, M.D. Dr. Clapp will discuss clinical trial research as well as the Morris Greene Clinical Residency Program (http://www.wellscenter.iupui.edu/about-the-program.html). For more general information, see http://www.wellscenter.iupui.edu/clapp.html.

Clinical Connexions
A clinical vignette will be presented in detail. The presentation will be punctuated by a commentary of the underlying pathphysiology thereby providing a real-time connection between basic and clinical medicine. This is a great opportunity for medical students to understand the anatomy of a case report as current students will help to present portions of the case at different learning levels. We hope this session will aid in understanding the clinical vignettes during the plenary session. MSP, M1 to M4 students encouraged to attend

First Response for Med Students
This program will be the Fire and Safety Institute. It is a smaller session intended to allow participants hands on exposure to first response areas.
Station 1- Basic EMS; Audience: M1

  • At the conclusion of this station, students will practice performing an initial BLS assessment (Airway, Breathing, Circulation).
  • At the conclusion of this station, students will practice CPR and utilizing an AED.

Station 2- Advanced EMS; Audience: M2 and above.

  • At the conclusion of this station, students will observe an advanced assessment of an unresponsive patient.
  • At the conclusion of this station, students will observe and practice utilizing Advanced Life Support techniques, including EKG application and interpretation, IV or IO access, invasive airway adjuncts (ET Tube or Surgical Tracheostomy), and medication administration.

Station 3- Vehicle Accident; Audience: All

  • At the conclusion of this station, students will practice relaying pertinent information about a car accident to a 911 dispatcher.
  • At the conclusion of this station, students will learn basic first aid techniques for a patient in a car accident.
  • At the conclusion of this station, students will learn techniques firefighters use to extricate patients entrapped in a vehicle.

Mechanical Patients
This presentation will involve use of the Sim-Man Patient simulator, a tool used to offer hands on training. Information can be found at http://simlab.peoria.uic.edu/ . The sessions will be presented for two separate audiences. The early advanced session is intended to involve M3-M4 students and entails running an actual scenario. The later session is intended for MSP-M2 students and covers basic concepts such as how the simulators work, what they can and can’t do.

Diversity in the Patient-Provider Relationship.
As the healthcare field becomes increasingly diverse, new topic are emerging in the realm of patient-provider interaction. Diversity ranges from background, race, education, medical literacy and more. This session features a panel of physicians and faculty discussing how patient-provider interaction is evolving, taking into account this diversity.

Want to Save a Firefighter?
Most people recognize that firefighting is a dangerous occupation.  But, do you know the life-threatening condition that is most likely to result in a firefighter being transported to the hospital?  Firefighters have the highest rate of occupational death due to sudden cardiac arrest of any occupation.  This presentation will identify the occupational risks of firefighting and explore the work related demands of firefighting.  Data will be presented from studies investigating the physiological stress of firefighting. Discussions will range from what you need to know about firefighting if you see a firefighter in a family care practice to what you need to know if you see a firefighter in the emergency room.
