Registration Information

MSP students need to be registered at both the UIC and UIUC campuses, however, UIC registration will be taken care of by the Office of Student Affairs.

MSP students must complete their own registration for the UIUC campus (i.e. all graduate coursework).

UIUC Registration Deadline:

How to register

  1. Be sure you know your EnterpriseID.
  2. If you are taking M1 courses, please remember to complete the MSP Student Request and Approval Form.

Maintaining full-time enrollment at both campuses

MSP students must enroll in appropriate filler courses so they have full-time records on both campuses in order to assess fees.

Filler courses for UIUC:

  • Pre-M1: MSP 600 (Fall-41706) (Spring-41440) (Summer 31098) These filler courses are intended for those who have not yet completed M1. MSPers enroll in the Pre-M1 courses on the UIUC campus.
  • Completing M1: MSP 601 (Fall-41707) (Spring-41441) (Summer-31099) These filler courses are intended for those who will be completing M1 during the current academic year.  MSPers enroll in the Post-M1 course on the UIUC campus.
  • Post M1: MSP 601 (Fall-41707) (Spring-41441) (Summer-31099) These filler courses are intended for those who have completed M1 (and usually the PhD) and are moving through the COM.

Filler courses for UIC:

  • BMS 609 (Fall-14865) (Spring-14218) (Summer-13922) is to be used by those who need filler hours on the UIC side of registration.  The BMS 609 filler course should be used by all students when enrolling in medical courses at UIC regardless of Pre-M1 or Post-M1 standing at UIUC.

The 12-12-12 Rule (For Summer this would be 8-8-8)

In general all MSP students should adhere to the 12-12-12 Registration Rule.  This means that you should be enrolled at UIUC campus for a minimum of 12 hours, enrolled at UIC for a minimum of 12 hours and enrolled in a total of 12 "real" hours between the two campuses.  You can use the MSP "filler" hours to help bring your total hours up to 12 hours at each campus.  However, these are just holding hours and you do not receive any credit for them.  For many of you who are receiving financial aid, you must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 "real" hours between the two campuses.  We are aware that there are exceptions to this rule that must be considered on a case by case basis.  If you have any questions or concerns about your registration, please contact either Robbin Burge or Nora Few for more information.

Assessment of Fees

In general, tuition for MSP students will be assessed by the Graduate (or Law) College during the first few years of participation in the program.  Once an MSP student indicates they will be completing the M1 curriculum, the College of Medicine will begin to assess tuition.  This distinction is important because each degree-granting department needs to count the MSP student in their program for a reasonable period of time (3 to 5 years).  Arrangements have been made such that when Graduate College tuition is assessed, the UIUC Office of Student Financial Aid processes tuition waivers.  When the college of Medicine assesses tuition, the corresponding office at UIC processes tuition waivers.  The Student Affairs/MSP office is responsible for coordinating and communicating with the financial aid offices so that they process waivers appropriately.  The filler courses discussed above that MSPers enroll in help determine the college that will be assessing the tuition.
