2005 marked the 25th anniversary of the Medical Scholars Program Allerton Research Symposium. This year we had over 150 students, alumni, research and clinical faculty advisors and administrators attend the symposium on August 27-28, 2005. A special thank you to Steve Sanderson for capturing the day’s events in photos. Our afternoon began with welcoming remarks in which the entering class was introduced and MSPAC representative, Bruce Geryk, presented our MSP Outstanding Advisor Awards to Dr. Enrico Gratton, Department of Physics and Dr. Richard Gumport, Department of Biochemistry. Our hats off to these great advisors nominated by their students! Mid-afternoon, Dean Brad Schwartz gave some 25th Anniversary Remarks where we honored two retired administrators who have helped to build the very strong foundation of the MSP: Former Regional Dean of the College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Daniel K. Bloomfield and Former MSP Acting Director, Dr. Diane L. Gottheil. MSP student, Adam Wolfe also presented Dr. Jennifer L. Bloom with a plaque on behalf of the MSP in honor of 10 Outstanding Years of Service to the MSP. Adam Wolfe also showcased his “Reflections of Allerton” video in which he compiled pictures from the MSP at Allerton over the last 25 years! It is awesome! Our afternoon then consisted of the largest poster session to date at Allerton and five outstanding student research presentations by the following MSPers: Peter Rohloff, PhD, Anobel Tamrazi, PhD, Russell Horwitz, Matthew Gambino and Marie Leger, PhD. They each gave us wonderful insight into their exciting worlds of research. We thank all of the students who presented either a talk and/or a poster and shared their research findings with all of us. In the late afternoon, a panel of MSP alumni discussed job opportunities for MD/PhD students in the pharmaceutical, biotech, and other industries. Our panel will included three outstanding MSP graduates: Nora Zorich, MD, PhD, Medical Director, New Drug Development at Proctor & Gamble; Andy Krivoshik, MD, PhD, Associate Medical Director for Physician Development Program at Abbott Laboratories; and John Maier, MD, PhD, Senior Biomedical Scientist for ChemImage Corporation– a start-up biotechnology company in Pittsburgh. They gave very insightful presentations on career opportunities in industry, did a great job presenting their career paths and answering student questions. It is always so wonderful to have our alumni share their success stories! In addition, Nora Zorich, PhD then gave a great keynote address, “The Long, Winding Road to Drug Development: Policy, Politics, Science and Implications” after dinner. We wrapped up our symposium announcing the Swartz-Flood Award for the Best Student Presentation to Anobel Tamrazi, PhD and the Best Poster Award to Georgina Aldridge. Our new elected MSPAC representatives include the following: Class I: Margaret Ferris Committee Members: |
