Helpful Hints for Speaker Introductions

1. Thank you for agreeing to introduce a speaker.
   
   
2. Your introduction will be very brief-max. 30 seconds. You should try to present the big picture of the work in the lab and where the speaker's research fits in the picture (for Humanities & Social Sciences students, the comments can focus on work in the speaker's field more broadly.)
   
   
3. Avoid just announcing a list of credentials. Include some personal facts about the speaker such as their hobbies and other fun facts. Try to present the speaker as approachable and as personable as possible.

   An Example:

   After graduating from the University of California at Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1992, Michael joined the Medical Scholars Program as an MD/PhD student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Michael received his M.S. in 1995 and his PhD in 1999 from ECE. Michael is graduating this May with his Medical Degree and plans to              . Michael is married to Gayle and they have a 16-month old son, Jerome. It is pleasure to introduce to you Dr. Michael Lam.
   
   

4. Introducers should sit with the speaker they will be introducing, if possible. Introducers will introduce the speaker approximately 1 minute before the speaker is scheduled to start his/her talk.
