MSP Fall Retreat

Saturday August 21, 2004

Medical Scholars Program
Lake of the Woods Pavilion, Lake of the Woods Park
Mahomet, Illinois

Many thanks to those of you who attended and participated in this year‘s 2004 MSP Fall. For those of you who were unable to join us, you missed a great time! Here are some event photos, many thanks to Steve Sanderson & Jenny Bloom. Kudos to the MSP Fall Retreat Planning Committee and MSPAC for their commitment to making Saturday a success. Likewise, I‘d like to extend a special thanks to the SA/MSP staff for their hard work behind the scenes for this event.

We started off the day with Welcoming Remarks from various folks including a welcome from the co-chair, Snehal Patel, an update on the David Yu Memorial Service (date to be announced), MSPAC update and a special welcome for the entering class. A new award was presented this year, the "Admissions Extra Mile Service Award" to the individual(s) who went above and beyond to help us with admissions season this last year including housing students for overnights, taking them to lunch on their interview day, airport/train pick-ups, etc. This year, the award was presented to Matt Hartman. We certainly appreciate everyone who helps us with our admissions season and look forward to a plethora of volunteers again this year!

Next, Jason Agran, MSPAC representative, introduced the new MSPAC Big Sib Mentoring Program and also facilitated an icebreaker that got everyone mingling and communicating with one another! We then ate lunch in color groups and had a getting to know you table discussion facilitated by Big Sib team leaders.

The afternoon was filled with student speaker talks by Ramji Rajendran, Chad Thomas, Joanna Burton, Ben Moreno & Jeff Barnes, a poster session, MSPAC elections, T-shirt sales & our keynote speaker, MSP alumnus M. Kerry O‘Banion, MD, PhD, Associate Professor in the Neurobiology and Anatomy Department and the Neurology Department at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. O’Banion is also the Director of the Rochester MD/PhD Program. Dr. O’Banion is one of the discoverers of the inducible cyclooxygenase COX-2. His research has led to a new class of drugs, the COX-2 inhibitors, which include the arthritis treatments Celebrex and Vioxx. His current research is focused on the role of COX-2 in the brain’s reaction to injury and disease, including Alzheimer’s Disease. Dr. O’Banion exemplifies a successful scientist and educator whose research has a direct impact on patient care. For more information about Kerry.

The keynote was followed by our MSP Oustanding Advisor Award Announcement given by Matt Elkins, MSPAC Representative. This year‘s MSP Outstanding Advisor Award was presented to both Dr. Harris Lewin, Department of Animal Sciences and Dr. Ruth Watkins, Speech & Hearing Sciences. Congratulations to Dr. Lewin & Dr. Watkins, as well as all of our other wonderful MSP Advisors who go above and beyond to mentor and support our Medical Scholars. We ended the evening with a lasagna dinner & a MSPAC Scavenger Hunt. We hope that those who attended were able to catch up with colleagues and make new friends. We hope to see everyone there again next year for our 25th Annual MSP Fall Retreat!
