Medicine I Clerkship

The Medicine I Clerkship provides students with a variety of experiences in the primary care of adults. The first eight weeks of the clerkship are spent either at Carle Foundation Hospital or Provena Covenant Medical Center. Two of those weeks are spent in an ambulatory setting. Both are community hospitals located in Urbana, IL. Weeks nine through 12 are spent at the Danville, IL, VA where the students work closely with an attending physician.

The University of Illinois sponsors an Internal Medicine Residency Program, so clerks have the opportunity to work closely with residents as a member of a care team. Each team generally consists of one senior resident, one intern and one or two students, depending on site and scheduling. Each student will have the opportunity to work with multiple teams during the clerkship.

Honorary Professor of Medicine

Our patients are one of our most valuable learning resources.
We appreciate those patients who give of themselves to help us
learn. These are the people who give us their time for the history and physical examination or the procedure.

Please thank them every time you can, both verbally, and by awarding
them with an "Honorary Professor of Medicine" certificate.

You can find the certificate generation mechanism here.

Clerkship Activities

While stationed at the Urbana hospitals, clerkship students have a variety of learning activities, both experiential and didactic. Students will receive their clerkship schedule of activities at their orientation.

Experiential Activities:

  • In-patient Service
  • Ambulatory Medicine
  • Challenging Patients and Situations in Medicine
    • Medical students rotating in internal medicine are involved in the care of patients that are seriously ill and may be experiencing an undesirable medical outcome or death. The student may witness a mentor exhibit poor professional behavior towards patients, colleagues or students, modeling weak medical practice, immature interpersonal skills or both. In order to become competent in dealing with difficult patients, students need to develop three sets of skills. These include: communication skills, clinical reasoning skills, and the ability to maintain emotional balance and professionalism.

This seminar will be co-taught by an internist and psychiatrist, both who are experienced clinicians and educators. They will work with a small group of students, no more than 8, who meet during weeks 2-6 of the clerkship, 1½ hours each session. It will occur in a medical setting, and may include going to the bedside.

While working in the hospitals, students will:
  • Perform complete history and physicals
  • Develop a problem list and management plan
  • Write orders co-signed by resident or attending
  • Perform or observe procedures

Since much of the Medicine I clerkship takes place in the in-patient setting, the clerkship provides a variety of experiences including an ambulatory block for the students outside of the hospital. While in Urbana, all students will engage in the following activities:

  • Afternoon in the STD Clinic -- Champaign-Urbana Public Health
  • Two weeks with an Internal Medicine attending in an ambulatory care setting

Didactic Activities

In addition to experience with patient care, the practice of Medicine requires constant study and scholarship. To help students increase their medical knowledge, the clerkship provides the following learning activities:

Core Lectures

Lectures are held weekly on a variety of topics relevant to Internal Medicine. Core lecture schedule will be given to students during orientation.

Conferences

The Department of Medicine sponsors a comprehensive lecture series held at Noon most weekdays and every Thursday afternoon from 1:30-4:30. See the updated conference calendar for the IM residents.

Teaching Attending Rounds

Depending on your site, teaching rounds are held three to five times weekly. These sessions provide a formal way of discussing cases and learning about patient care. Attendings will assign presentations to students and residents.
