GRADE FOR THE CLERKSHIP
The final grade for the Medicine I Core Clerkship is based on the clinical evaluation of the student and the NBME score (first attempt.) The clinical grade accounts for 67% of the final grade and the NBME score accounts for 33%. To see how the final grade is calculated, click here. 1. Successfully complete all clerkship requirements
AND
2. Receive a score on the National Board examination that is above the passing threshold set by the University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine. The passing rate varies from year to year based on the national mean scores for that year.
The clinical clerkship grade is determined by the Clerkship Director, Attendings, and Residents and is based on the following criteria:
Basic knowledge of pathophysiology
Demonstration of clinical judgment, skills, attitudes and interpersonal relations acquired during the clerkship
Ability to present and discuss cases
Performance at the Ambulatory Clinic
Weekly written case write-ups
Appropriate use of academic and clinical lectures
Satisfactory completion of all other required clerkship activities
Initiative
Beginning with the academic year 2007-2008, the Internal Medicine clerkship has added additional grading criteria for receiving a grade of Outstanding.
1. All required patient write-ups and the Medicine I Core Clerkship Patient Problems and Required Procedures checklist will be submitted by the designated due dates or the student will not be eligible for the grade of Outstanding in the clinical portion of the Medicine I Clerkship. In addition, a Professionalism Incident Report will be completed by the Clerkship Director and submitted to the Office of Student Affairs.
2. In order to achieve a final grade of Outstanding, students must score at least at the national mean on the NBME exam. The national mean score currently is 75.

“Incomplete” or (INC) will be awarded to a student if all requirements are not met by the conclusion of the clerkship due to illness or other extenuating non-academic circumstances. Also, if a student does not meet the specified departmental passing level on the NBME Subject Exam, the student will receive the grade of "Incomplete" or (INC) and will be informed by the department by what date they must retake the exam.
