
Gateway II :The Gateway to Research Experience

Purpose:
The Gateway Research Experience seeks to increase pre-clinical student awareness of opportunities for research in a basic science of clinical arena of the students' choice.
Goals:
- To introduce pre-clinical students to research.
- To promote scholarly activity.
- To help both students and faculty understand research resources available at UIUC.
- To acknowledge research done by Students and Faculty collaborations at the regional and national level.
Objectives:
- Through a systematic process, guide the medical student through the research process from developing the research question to the completion of the research project.
- Promote the collaboration of UIUC-COM PhD research faculty with physician faculty for future research activities.
Introducation
Students selected for this project will be placed with experienced clinical and/or basic sciences research mentors in a process that will allow the student to gain basic research skills. The topics that will be addressed include review of the Institutional Review Board process, data collection, data analysis and data dissemination.
Students may work with a faculty member to design an original project or if desired can be placed in an ongoing research project. When available, students will participate in the research course of the Department of Medicine. Students will be referred to a text which outlines basic research methodologies.
Students who are selected for Gateway II may select research projects in a variety of medical fields. Students selected in Gateway II will be asked to identify projects that are specific to Primary Care Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine.
Methods
Applications for Gateway II are posted on line. A committee of faculty reviews applications and selects those applications which best fulfill the objectives of the program. Three positions are available in Gateway II.
Students may select time periods of 6 or 12 weeks for participation between the 2nd week of May and the 2nd week of August. Students receive a stipend of $200 weekly. Students who develop their research work for presentation at a regional or national meeting will receive a bonus of $600.
