Clerkship Goal
The basic clerkship in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine is an eight week program offered by pediatricians in the
Champaign-Urbana community.  Active participants in the program include the pediatric staff of Carle Clinic and
Christie Clinic.  Teaching responsibilities are also shared by many ancillary medical personnel, including the nurse
practitioners and nursing staff from various departments.

Each student will be provided a schedule of teaching experiences and will be assigned to work in an office setting with a primary care pediatrician one afternoon per week.  Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of subspecialty evaluations or clinics such as, neurology, gastroenterology, allergy, asthma, genetics, rheumatology, diabetes, cranio-facial, cystic fibrosis, and hematology/oncology.

  1. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the basic sources of pediatric medical literature.
  2. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the usual patterns of growth and development in infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and know how to evaluate variations in growth and development.
  3. The student will demonstrate an awareness of normal behavior patterns and familiarization of way of managing common behavioral disorders.
  4. The student will recognize the nutritional needs of infants, children, and adolescents.
  5. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the recommended schedule for immunizations and other health maintenance procedures.
  6. The student will demonstrate awareness of methods of anticipatory guidance and health education in the preschool years.
  7. The student will demonstrate the ability to recognize the health concerns of the school age child, including attention deficit and learning disorders.
  8. The student will demonstrate awareness of the physical and developmental changes of adolescence and to be familiar with common adolescent health problems, including substance abuse, depression, suicide, accidents, violence, sexually transmitted diseases, and pregnancy.
  9. The student will be able to recognize the common illnesses of childhood and to know the appropriate treatment for such illnesses.

The student will develop skills related to pediatric patients.

  1. The student will demonstrate the skills in evaluating infants, children, and adolescents, including the ability to obtain age-appropriate history, and in performing an adequate physical examination.
  2. The student will demonstrate the ability to give routine care to the normal neonate.
  3. The student will appreciate the problems of ‘high-risk’ and the premature infant.
  4. The student will demonstrate skills in obtaining an appropriate history, performing a complete physical examination, and arrive at a presumptive diagnosis on the hospitalized patient.
  5. The student will demonstrate the ability to interact with the primary physician in the treatment and daily care of the hospitalized patient, and to document this through appropriate progress notes.
  6. The student will demonstrate the ability to present a case, including all pertinent diagnostic studies in a clear and concise manner and in such a way as to support the diagnosis.
