   Clerkship Goal

During the course of the clerkship, students will:

  1. Assume graduated and supervised responsibility for patient care.
  2. Acquire a basic knowledge of internal medicine, especially as relates to assigned patients.
  3. Perform and record thorough, accurate, and pertinent histories using appropriate sources.
  4. Perform and record thorough physical examinations and review them with the faculty. 
  5. Utilize correct clinical reasoning and hypothesis-generation to study presenting problems and guide diagnosis and management.

  1. Effectively provide daily care for patients as part of the inpatient team. (patient care; medical knowledge; interpersonal and communication skills; professionalism)

a) Students will integrate basic and clinical science knowledge to understand, explain and treat patient problems.

b) Students will construct clear progress notes to document an updated assessment and plan.

c) Students will orally present a follow-up patient’s case in a focused manner with an appropriate amount of detail including concise interim history, focused physical exam findings and diagnostic and management plans.

d) Students will on a daily basis assess and modify, if necessary, the clinical management for common medical problems of assigned patients while assisting in the continuity of care of these patients.

 

e) Students will follow patients through their entire hospitalization including performing basic medical procedures under the guidance and supervision of senior team members.

b) Students will begin to apply the basic and clinical sciences that underlie the practice of internal medicine to the clinical care of the patient.

c) Students will apply knowledge to clinical problem-solving, clinical decision-making and critical thinking.

d) Students will access and utilize information resources to help develop an appropriate plan of care for common and uncommon medical problems.

e) Students will demonstrate an understanding of key concepts and principles related to preventive medicine and nutrition.

  1. Evaluate patients hospitalized with acute illness. (patient care; medical knowledge)

a) Students will obtain and record a patient’s history in a logical, chronologically organized and thorough manner.

b) Students will perform and record an appropriately complete and accurate physical examination.

c) Students will obtain, interpret and analyze important supplemental information including lab data, EKGs and chest x-rays.

 

 

d) Students will synthesize information from patient’s history, physical examination and laboratory data to formulate a problem list with a reasoned differential diagnosis for each patient problem.

e) Students will correlate results of diagnostic tests and procedures with the information from the history and physical examination to develop a patient management plan.
