The 2008 Research Symposium was a huge success. Over 300 people registered. The day began with exciting simultanous sessions on The Clinical Case Report, First Response for Med Students, The Fire Service Institute Research, The Patient Simulator, Research in Residency and Diveristy among Patients/Providers. Posters were also presented and judged at this time. After a short break, lunch was served and the audience enjoyed a slideshow presentation featuring the many talents of students, residents and faculty members. The afternoon program began with a welcome from Smita Das, Dr. Robert Kirby and the Emcees, Stacey Hughes and Nathan Valentine. Dr. Boppart, Keynote, delivered a memorable presentation on his research and his research-physician path. He also offered advice for the aspiring medical students and residents. The main plenary session featured six research presentation from MSP students, two clinical vingettes from medical students and seven clinical vignettes from residents. This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Stephen Boppart is a highly esteemed Professor at the University of Illinois. Dr. Boppart is Director of the Mills Breast Cancer Institute where he has been developing the infrastructure for comprehensive patient care including multi-specialty patient-focused approaches, integrated clinical and translational research, and patient, caregiver, and provider education. He also holds a joint appointment as an Associate Professor in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Bioengineering, and Internal Medicine at UIUC. He is Head of the Biophotonics Imaging Laboratory at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology where his group is developing novel biomedical optical detection and diagnostic technologies for cancer.
In addition to the keynote speaker, there will be several student presentations, including poster sessions, science talks, and clinical vignettes. Also offered will be optional simultaneous small group sessions on a number of different topics including advice on starting research, health care access, healthcare/research ethics, finding funding and patient-provider communication. A complimentary lunch will be provided for all in attendance.
